Pragna Vivardhana Karthikeya Stotram /stotra on skanda is from the rudra yamala, an important work on tantra . It is a short stotra but also remarkably powerful. The stotra is credited with developing the pragya / intelligence and has been given by skanda himself. This is also called as Pragna Vivardhana Sri Subrahmanya Stotram/ Pragna Vivardhana Sri Karthikeya Stotram.
pragya vivardhana (increasing pragya) mantras are very important in the vedas and other later literature like the tantras . Why is the development of pragya given such importance? The answer is given in the vedas itself .
In the trisuparna mantra in the mahanarayana upanishad, the following mantras occur:
ब्रह्म मेधया । Brahman is attained through intelligence
मधु मेधया । Bliss is attained through intelligence
ब्रह्ममेव मधु मेधया । Brahman, which is verily bliss is attained through intelligence
It should however be noted that the intelligence or medha which is referred to here is not the mundane intelligence which we refer to in our daily lives. This medha refers to the development of the buddhi such that the truth can be clearly seen. Shri ramana maharshi gives an analogy to illustrate how the pure and clear buddhi perceives brahman .Brahman is hidden from the view of the unclear buddhi like dense clouds hiding the sun.The clear buddhi which has been obtained by intense sadhana, sees brahman like a person seeing the sun through a thin mist .Thus the jeevanmukta, is different from a person without a clear buddhi.
Hence, development of buddhi is given prime importance in our tradition .The most famous examples is the gayatri mantra, which is chanted during the daily sandhyavandanam . Another one is the nitya karma for brahmacharis, the samitadanam . There are various mantras given in the mahanarayana upanishad itself, the mantra invoking indra (yashchandasam etc) and the medha suktam (addressed to sarasvati and others). There are, of course many more such mantras in the vedas. However, the recitation of these mantras requires learning them from a guru and many of us are unable to get such an opportunity, especially in this modern age. But, the stotrams from puranas and the tantras can be chanted by one and all, with no exceptions.
In thamiz tradition, skanda, or murukan as he is called, is considered the very embodiment of all good and it is held that he is eager to bestow gyana to one and all . Thus, true to tradition, at the end of the stotram he says that anyone chanting his 28 names, even if he is unable to speak will become accomplished in speech, like Brihaspati . The person who considers this as maha mantra and chants them will attain mahapragya (great intelligence).

Pragna Vivardhana Sri Karthikeya 28 Names – కార్తికేయుని 28 నామములు:
యోగీశ్వరః – యోగీశ్వరులకు అధిపతి
మహాసేనః – దేవసైన్యానికి అధిపతి, దేవసేనాపతి
కార్తికేయః – ఆరు కృత్తికా నక్షత్రములచే పోషింపబడిన వాడు
అగ్నినన్దనః – పరమశివుని జ్ఞానాగ్ని నుంచి ఉద్భవించినవాడు మరియు పరమశివుని తేజస్సు కొంత సేపు భరించినందువల్ల, అగ్ని దేవునికి కూడా తనయుడిగా పిలువబడినవాడు.
స్కందః – పరమశివుని తేజస్సు నుండి జన్మించినవాడు
కుమారః – కుమార అన్న నామం కేవలం సుబ్రహ్మణ్యునికే చెందినది. ఎందుకంటే, జగత్తుకి మాతా పితలు అయిన పార్వతీ పరమేశ్వరుల అన్యోన్యతకి ఫలం మన బుజ్జి సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడు.
సేనానీః – దేవసేనలకు అధిపతి, దేవసేనాధ్యుక్షుడు.
స్వామీ శంకరసంభవః – శంకరుని దివ్యమైన తేజస్సు నుండి పుట్టినవాడు.
గాంగేయః – పరమశివుని తేజస్సు అగ్నిదేవుడు భరించలేక, గంగా మాతకి ఇచ్చేస్తే, గంగా మాత కొంత సేపు శివుని తేజస్సును భరిస్తుంది. అందువల్ల, గంగా మాతకి కూడా పుత్రునిగా పిలబడ్డవాడు కాబట్టి గాంగేయ అనే నామం వచ్చింది.
తామ్రచూడః – కుక్కుటమును అధిరోహించిన వాడు.
బ్రహ్మచారీ – ఎల్లప్పుడూ బ్రహ్మనందు రమించువాడు.
శిఖిధ్వజః – అగ్ని ధ్వజముగా కలవాడు
తారకారిః – తారకాసురడనే రాక్షస సంహారము చేయుటకు అవతారం దాల్చిన వాడు, తారకాసురుడిని, ఇతర రాక్షస గణములను సంహరించి దేవతలను రక్షించినవాడు.
ఉమాపుత్రః – ఉమాదేవి, అంటే పార్వతీ అమ్మ వారి ముద్దుల తనయుడు. అందుకే సుబ్రహ్మణ్య స్వామి వారు అచ్చం అమ్మవారి లానే ఉంటారు.
క్రౌంచారిః – పర్వత రూపములో ఉన్న క్రౌంచ అనే రాక్షసుడిని సంహరించినవాడు.
షడాననః – ఆరు ముఖములు గలవాడు.
శబ్దబ్రహ్మసముద్రః – జ్ఞాన స్వరూపుడు, అంటే వేదములు ఏ పరబ్రహ్మ స్వరూపమును గురించి ఘోషిస్తున్నాయో, ఆ వేద శబ్దములచే ప్రతిపాదించబడిన వాడు.
సిద్ధః – పరిపూర్ణ సిద్ధ స్వరూపుడు
సారస్వతః – సరస్వతీ స్వరూపము, అంటే జ్ఞాన స్వరూపము.
గుహః – సకలజీవుల హృదయ గుహలో కొలువై ఉన్నవాడు.
భగవాన్ సనత్కుమారః – చతుర్ముఖ బ్రహ్మ గారి నలుగురు మానస పుత్రులలో ఒకరైన సనత్కుమారుడే సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడిగా వచ్చారు. ఈ విషయమే, త్రిపురా రహస్యంలో మాహాత్మ్యఖండంలో వివరించబడినదని, శ్రీ శ్రీ శ్రీ చంద్రశేఖరేంద్ర సరస్వతి మహాస్వామి వారు నిర్ధారించారు.
భోగమోక్షఫలప్రదః – ఈ భూమి మీద మనం సుఖంగా జీవించడానికి అవసరమైన సంపదతో పాటు అంత్యమునందు మోక్షమును కూడా ఇవ్వగలిగినవాడు.
శరజన్మా – శరవణతటాకము (రెల్లు పొదల) నుండి జన్మించినవాడు.
గణాధీశః – సకల దేవతలకు, గణములకు అధిపతి అయిన వాడు.
పూర్వజః – అందరికన్నా ముందున్నవాడు, అంటే ఇక్కడ సుబ్రహ్మణ్య స్వామి వారు, కేవలం ఒక అవతారం మాత్రమే కాదు, ఎప్పుడూ ఉండే పరబ్రహ్మ స్వరూపం. ఆయన ఎప్పుడూ ఉన్నవాడు, పుట్టుక లేనివాడు.
ముక్తిమార్గకృత్ – ముక్తి మార్గమును బోధించే గురు స్వరూపం. అంత్యమున ముక్తిని ప్రసాదించి, తనలో కలుపుకునే స్వామి.
సర్వాగమప్రణేతా – సకల ఆగమములకు మూలము.
వాంచితార్ధప్రదర్శనః – అభీష్టములను నెరవేర్చే తండ్రి.

The sixteen names are not explained since they are easily understood. Some of the names refer to some legends associated with skanda.
