Chaitra Masam Festivals in Telugu Calendar (March/April)

This Chaitra Month, or Chaitra Masa, is the first month in a traditional Telugu calendar followed in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Some of the important festivals and auspicious days include Ugadi, Chaitra Navratri, Soubhagya Gauri Vratam and Ram Navami.

Chaitra is the 1st lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

Chaitra Masam, the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, spans from March 30 to April 27 in 2025. This month is replete with significant festivals and auspicious days. Below is a detailed list of these events along with their corresponding dates and Tithi timings:​

Ugadi (March 30, 2025): Marking the Telugu New Year, Ugadi falls on Chaitra Shukla

Chaitra Navratri (March 30 – April 6, 2025): This nine-day festival, also known as Vasant Navratri, begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and concludes on Chaitra Shukla Navami. Each day is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga. ​

Gudi Padwa (March 30, 2025): Celebrated primarily in Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa coincides with Ugadi, marking the New Year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. ​

Gangaur (March 31, 2025): Observed on Chaitra Shukla Tritiya, Gangaur is a significant festival in Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh, dedicated to Goddess Parvati. ​

Yamuna Chhath (April 3, 2025): Falling on Chaitra Shukla Shashthi, this day is dedicated to the worship of River Yamuna. ​

Rama Navami (April 6, 2025): Celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Navami, this festival commemorates the birth of Lord Rama. ​

Swaminarayan Jayanti (April 6, 2025): Coinciding with Rama Navami, this day marks the birth anniversary of Lord Swaminarayan. ​

Kamada Ekadashi (April 8, 2025): Observed on Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi, devotees fast and offer prayers on this day.

Hanuman Jayanti (April 12, 2025): Celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, this festival marks the birth of Lord Hanuman. ​

Chaitra Purnima (April 12, 2025): The full moon day in Chaitra Masam is considered auspicious for various rituals and fasting. ​

Varuthini Ekadashi (April 23, 2025): Falling on Chaitra Krishna Ekadashi, devotees observe fasting and prayers. ​

Masa Shivaratri (April 26, 2025): Observed on Chaitra Krishna Chaturdashi, devotees worship Lord Shiva on this night. ​

Chaitra Amavasya (April 27, 2025): The new moon day in Chaitra Masam, considered significant for performing ancestral rituals. ​

List of Chaitra Festivals:

Sheetala Ashtami – Sheetala Ashtami day, which is also known as Basoda Puja, is dedicated to Goddess Sheetala.

Papmochani Ekadashi – Papmochini Ekadashi is one of the twenty four Ekadashi vrats which are observed to seek blessing of Lord Vishnu.

Ranga Panchami – At some places in India Holi is played on Ranga Panchami. Ranga Panchami usually falls after five days of Holi festivity in rest of the India.

Ghatasthapana – Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Chaitra Navratri. It marks the beginning of nine days festivity.

Ugadi – Ugadi marks the beginning of the New Year according to the lunisolar calendar. This festival is also known as Yugadi.

Gudi Padwa – Gudi Padwa or Samvatsar Padvo is celebrated as the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and Konkanis.

Gangaur – The consort of Lord Shiva, Gauri is worshipped during Gangaur festival. Both married and unmarried women worship Goddess Gauri on this day.

Yamuna Chhath – Yamuna Chhath is celebrated as birth anniversary of Goddess Yamuna.

Rama Navami – On Rama Navami day Hindus celebrate the birth of Lord Rama. On this day Lord Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya of Ayodhya.

Kamada Ekadashi – Kamada Ekadashi is one of the twenty four Ekadashi vrats which are observed to seek blessing of Lord Vishnu.

Hanuman Jayanti – Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman, the Vanara god, widely venerated throughout India.

Chaitra Purnima – Chaitra Purnima is the first Purnima in the year according to Hindu lunar calendar and it comes after Yugadi and Gudi Padwa.
